Who is the real Dr. Stephen Hawking? Is he a detached Spectator seeking a mathematical description of a deterministic, objective reality – ‘out there’? Or is he an embodied Participant in the universe seeking to bring about a more desirable future? The timeline of the book is a four-city lecture tour the author organized for Hawking in the early 1990s (Portland, Eugene, Seattle and Vancouver BC). Hawking’s powerful meetings with students with disabilities, officially collateral events, were remarkable. However, the greater significance of these ‘stories of the road’ is better appreciated in the context of the central narrative question of the book the nature of the universe and our place/role in it.

The author, a philosopher of science (Berkeley, London), engages Hawking, his graduate assistants and eventually his nurses in what starts as a critical review of the ‘new physics’ of Einstein, Bohr and Heisenberg. The question of the limits of classical science expands to questions of the limits of all supposedly objectivist, ‘one right answer’ ideologies – in biological, socio-economic, and political realms. Is everyone ‘really’ selfish? Is the world objectively competitive or cooperative? In a parallel critical review of the ‘new philosophy of science’ the contributions of the author’s mentors, Feyerabend, Lakatos, Kuhn and Popper mark a parallel path to complementarity, undermining the Spectator representation of detached ‘objective’ inquiry.

Through his personal interactions Hawking reveals himself as a Participant, concerned with ‘how we should live’. He steers us toward a more desirable, moral future.
The new post-scientific Participant understanding of the universe requires a paradigm shift to a More General Theory that can both explain the successes of science and yet understand them in a new way. In the More General Theory, our embodied Participant inquiry is understood in a new way wherein the sciences and the humanities are necessarily re-unified.

Give Space My Love An Intellectual Odyssey with Dr Stephen Hawking edition by Terry Bristol Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews

An amazing book written by an amazing scholar. Terry Bristol not only details the fascinating minutia that come from Stephen Hawking's daily trials, but also leads the reader on a knowledgeable, comprehendible exploration of the philosophy of science. If you want a stimulating read that will provide deep insights into the thoughts of one of the world's leading scientists, as well as into the philosophy of science, this is your book. Eloquently written, "Give Space My Love" is a paean to the miraculous world of Stephen Hawking.
Give Space My Love is nothing short of remarkable. Written in an engaging conversational style, the book made me feel like I was right there with Dr. Hawking, his team and Terry Bristol as they made their way through a speaking tour, privy to their insights and theories about life, both humorous and thought-provoking. This is a great read for scientists and lay people alike. I look forward to Bristol’s next book!
In large measure this is a biographical account of Dr. STephen Hawking based on multiple personal contacts by the author Terry Bristol.
Dr. Hawking is characterized as an individual of remarkable intellect, vision, and most importantly courage in the face of severe physical impairments. His contributions as a theoretical physicist are reviewed in some detail with special emphasis placed on their philosophical implications. As much of his work deals with quantum mechanics, the individual is no longer seen as an isolated observer but rather a conscious participant in the cosmos. This phenomena extends to every individual and conveys a significance to our existence.
“Give Space My Love” is a wonderful intellectual journey with a hint of playfulness reminiscent of “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance”. While Terry does not shy away from the deep end of the philosophy of science pool, he artfully guides the reader through the salient ideas of 2000 years of natural philosophy and doesn’t just through them into the deep end. The mistake a potential reader can easily make is to assume that this book is only of interest to scientist and philosophers of science. It is a journey that can resonate with anyone who has struggled with the question “how should we live our lives” and finds the current litany of ideologies incomplete.
Rarely do we have the opportunity to get an insiders view of great scientists. Somehow, we have this vision that they are superhuman, and exist in another dimension. While this is true in many respects, this insider's view of Dr. Hawking is amazing. The struggles, the pain, the effort, the pressure to overcome life's obstacles brought out in this book, and how his life may be an example to others struggling with similar problems, is worth the read. His example of what can be done regardless of a person's disability helps us all. His example and interaction with students brings his greatness to even a new hight. It seems appropriate to be released in concert with the recently measured gravity wave released from black holes colliding. Reminded me a bit of "A Beautiful Mind!"
"Give Space My Love An Intellectual Odyssey with Dr. Stephen Hawking" gives the reader a rare insight into the personality and struggles of a mindful physicist dealing with a disease that would have long ago taken most people’s lives. It also provides us with a look into the minds and experiences of other experts as well as the author Terry Bristol who has provided wonderful opportunities for speakers and scientists like myself, as well as those attending such events, to present and hear the latest insights into our universe. This is a remarkable and worthwhile read for anyone interested in science and scientists themselves as human beings.

This is an exciting book for many reasons. It locates the most well known and well regarded of contemporary astro-physicists, Stephen Hawking, surprisingly at the forefront of a revolutionary paradigm shift in how the pursuit of science is understood within our culture, from the paradigm of a detached, objectivist spectator of a deterministic cosmic mechanism to the paradigm of an embodied participant of a universe in process. Bristol is not alone in pursuing this paradigm shift, there are many others that have been arguing and advocating such a shift for a good while, not least scientist-philosopher Michael Polanyi, whose 1958 book Personal Knowledge (newly reissued from U of Chicago Press) advocated for a post-critical understanding of scientific knowledge in continuity with non-scientific knowledge. For the past several years Bristol’s Institute of Science, Engineering, and Public Policy (ISEPP) Linus Pauling Memorial Lecture Series has brought to Portland, Oregon, a wide range of internationally recognized, eminent speakers who have collectively helped move forward this paradigm shift.
