A textbook dedictaed to karate and the kata and bunkai of Seienchin. There as an architectural maxim that says "form follows function". Many in the modern karate world interpreting kata take the form and try to fit function around the stylized motion i.e. they are having "function follow form". Originally the kata were formed as icons to archive self defense scenarios and therefore were created on the basis of "form following function". This text is not concerned with minor style differences (comments are of course given with regard to different styles and approaches) as one must remember that as little as 100 years ago the "modern karate styles" did not exist. Therefore, the focus of this text is on a core embusen (pattern) of the kata Seienchin and its applications - which are style universal and applicable to Goju, Shito-ryu, Kyokushin and Okinawan styles. A complete study of any kata should involve its history, philosophy, sports and medical physiology and application.

The photos are terrible (they used dots to create a gray scale as in old black and white newspapers) and you can hardly see the hands in a lot of them. I would not recommend this to anyone who is trying to learn this kata steps or its application..

HIGHLY BELIEVABLE APPLICATIONS AND TECHNIQUES . ALSO THE MENTALITY BEHIND THE APPLICATIONS IS
GOOD,WITH BIOLOGY DIAGRAMS EXPLAINING TOTAL EFFECT.
Just an update for buyers as I could not find any way to contact to update the book profile/contents. It has now been released as Edition 2 and is 154 pages long. Lulu publishres print and ship regardless of where the order is placed from (e.g. even an order). My understanding is that the "preview" of the copntents page etc. here on still only shows edition 1 (no way to change this I could find) depsite the fact Edition 2 would be shipped on an order.

Hopefully this information is helpful.

I have given high praise to the prior edition of this book. The revised edition has made several additions with the anatomic drawings and photographs.

Sensei Armgstrong is directly on point in his evaluation of the medical implications of the techniques cited in the bunkai. As a practioner of both Karate and medicine I feel competent to offer opinions.

As I have said before, he offers one of the best explanations of the necessity of both Kata and Bunkai in the practice of the martial arts.

This book should be in the library of serious martial artists.

In regards to the Kata Seienchin this book details the entire Kata including stylistic variations. It is therefore useful for practitioners of any style, and contains no preaching on a "best" way to do things. Instead it explores SEVERAL different applications for each technique and how those applications might relate to various stylistic differences. The applications are based on common acts of violence and are able to be executed against resisting opponents.

The Book also contains detailed medical diagrams and easy to understand graphics on medical outcomes of the Bunkai for the Kata. For example, solar plexus strikes, knock outs, striking the throat, striking the cateroid artery and much more.

Further the book contains detailed considerations of the use of Karate as compared with MMA, street applications compared with point fighting based applications, use of Karate for success in work and life, philosophy and history.

As a note several other kata/bunkai related books I have purchased have much filler on the history of the writer/style etc. This book does not waste your time with filler material.

I have both the original and the updated version of this book.. It is by far the best explanation I have ever seen in print on all aspects of this kata.. I highly recommend it..
