After a twenty-plus year career as a Parole Officer in Philadelphia, Alana Blue is more than ready to leave her job and move on to more rewarding work. Jaded and burned out, Alana is given the difficult assignment of supervising Rafe Ortiz, a renegade Probation and Parole Officer who arrives in Alana's office by way of a disciplinary transfer and with a reputation for accumulating meaningless sexual conquests. Alana's life is more complicated by the frequent conflicts she experiences with her homophobic daughter, Nikki. Convinced that the transparency of her mother's sexuality doomed her first marriage, Nikki is obsessed with keeping her second union intact, even if it means constantly repudiating Alana. Nikki's husband, Owen Reid, doesn't always agree with his wife's opinions regarding same-gender relationships; nor does he always support their marriage by remaining faithful to Nikki. As Alana is reaching for an opportunity to pursue a new career, the body of a brutally murdered university student is discovered partially hidden on a property very close to Alana's neighborhood. Detective Johnetta Jones, recently retired from the Philadelphia Police Force, and hired by a suburban law enforcement department, is assigned to the murder case. When the investigation leads her to one of Alana's parolees, Johnetta remembers having interviewed this particular Parole Officer once before. Although her memory of Alana is mostly pleasant, Johnetta remains more emotionally connected to her work than she is to any woman she's ever met. Vaguely discontent, she is reluctant to forge a romantic connection with anyone...until her path intersects with Alana's once again. Their renewed contact suggests the possibility of love and the end of loneliness for both women. As Johnetta and her work partner, Detective Harold Smythe, get close to solving the university student's murder, Johnetta realizes arresting their suspect will imperil her tenuous relationship with Alana. Alana becomes caught in the war between her impulsive attraction to Rafe Ortiz's flirtatious pursuit and her realization that her feelings for Johnetta Jones are growing deeper with each passing day. Will everything in Alana's world disintegrate when lies are revealed, true identities are exposed, and the murderer is unmasked?

The Butterfly Moments S Renee Bess 9781935053378 Books Reviews

Renee's "Butterfly Moments reminds me of the Pointer's Sister song about a slow hand. The book gives a mature glance at lesbians relationships taking their time and the trouble we can get into "tapping" everything in sight.
The Butterfly Moments is one of the most descriptive books I've ever read. Excellent writing, a sound plot, and realistic and plausible characters all continue the high standards Bess obviously set for herself in her books.

For me, one of the most interesting subjects in the book was the relationship between mother and daughter. The blame game is something that a lot of us can relate to whether we admit to it or not. And the reason behind it is almost always self centered.

Another pleasant thing about The Butterfly Moments is the surprise ending. It was definitely not expected or assumed. What makes a good read for me is an element of surprise, and Bess pulls this off well.
This novel was rich and deep. The author introduces several - at first seemingly unconnected - characters which are at the same time intriguing and every-day-common-folks. They are slowly coming together in an intricate dance where the expected and unexpected, predictable and unpredictable are moving the story forward up to a finale which brings together the two focal points of this book the lesbians and their relationships on the one hand and the resolution of a mystery on the other hand. And again those to focal points are woven together. The penmanship is remarkable - the words, the lines, the story itself have many nooks and crannies to savour.

Now some BUTS The story and the story telling are unusual, even quirky and certainly not your usual run-of-the-mill romance or mystery or whatever. It is not easy to pick a genre for this book. The blurb made my head spin and doesn't do the story justice IMO.

So try the book out. It is well worth the time and an excellent read!
What makes this book especially appealing is that it deals with mature characters who approach the creation of a relationship that way. Alana and Johnnie don't get sexual three pages after meeting each other. The reader will get the sense that these women have experienced life and know that there's more to being a couple than getting into bed. What happens between them develops in a very realistic manner. Early in the book, Alana is analyzing what she wants and opens with, "At first, I was convinced I wanted to be loved." Then she goes on through several paragraphs to describe in a very evocative manner the way many older women, especially lesbians who don't have partners, feel. The way that Bess develops these characters will remind the reader of people she knows. Rafe, for example, is typical of the child-woman who refuses to admit that she's too old to play the games she can't seem to resist and so she's self-destructive. Some of the events in the book are a little contrived, but Bess makes them work.

The Butterfly Moments is a murder mystery, a romance and a study of character development that's very well written. It would be difficult to find more reasons to read a book.
