NOW RELEASED The Fermi Paradox
Brandon Overall's second book has been released! This book is a standalone story set in the same universe as Superhuman Nature and takes place after the events in this book. Be sure to read the new book to find the answers to all of your remaining questions and embark on a completely new journey.

Superhuman Nature is Brandon Overall's first novel. It was written and published during his first deployment to Afghanistan as a 2nd Lieutenant in late 2013.

Neil Hitchens was a senior ROTC Cadet in college. He was just weeks away from graduating and becoming an Officer in the United States Army, until a strange dream set off a chain of events that would twist his life into something he could have never prepared for.

In the days following his dream, several strange happenings occurred that he began to suspect were the result of his own actions. Before long, he discovered that he had the ability to control the world around him with his mind.

What started out as an unpredictable ability quickly evolved into an extraordinary power that had the capacity to change the world. It didn't take long for the government to find out what Neil could do.

They knew having such limitless potential on the side of the US Military could give them limitless political influence, and they would stop at nothing to get Neil to do their bidding. They would find out what happens when you back a dangerous animal into a corner.

Neil spent his whole life believing he would amount to greatness, but he never expected how greatness could corrupt even the most innocent of minds.

Superhuman Nature eBook Brandon Overall

This first book by the author has a lot of good things going for it.

The premise is interesting ie where an ordinary person gains godlike powers.
Many descriptive passages have real zing. When the main character flies, the experience is so clear and his reactions are so believable, I felt hopeful for the book.
The plot is not original but is one that should guarantee lots of action. Government manipulation, war, relationships all mixed together. On paper if you listed the various scenes i imagine the book would look exciting and suspenseful.

However for me there were some serious problems.

The narrative of the fledgling god person losing its humanity is old as the hills - think Book of Ptath or The Watchmen's big blue naked guy (a fair amount of the plot seems lifted from Watchmen). But here there is no pathos or identification. I didnt pity the main character and found his "oops i did it again" scenes of violence just depressing.

There were Bourne like scenes of government villains and Bond like scenes where foreigners scream "die imperialistic scum" which I am only slightly paraphrasing. Through all of this the "hero" continued to have a teenager's voice in my opinion. The author may say this merely reflected the confusion caused by the growing powers, i say hooey.

The author also tried to join a stream of the story where the protagonist feels he is fated for great things with the main Super Powers dehumanise and corrupt thread. I thought unsuccessfully. Many reviewers have mentioned the clumsily foreshadowed "pawn of fate" ending. It many ways it invalidated the pretty repellant at times Becoming a God plot.

Having said all that I read the whole book and was curious to see what happened though I knew fairly soon it would not be satisfying other than at a blow them up level of story telling. Other reviewers have mentioned never knowing what would happen next and at one level that is true. Sadly that mild unpredictability didnt guarantee a good read.

The sample chapters were so very promising but the tone of those early scenes did not continue expect here and there eg flying or the sun scenes or compressing the cube (3 times!!). The best writing involved no human interaction which is telling.

So structurally and technically a reasonably good read especially for a first novel. But the plot and character writing was nowhere near adequate especially contrasted to the good points.

Surprisingly i might give this new author another go because the writing's virtues in some ways outweighed the faults.

I think the book deserves only two stars in its present form but I've changed it to 3 just because it kept my attention so well.

Superhuman Nature eBook Brandon Overall Reviews

I'd rate this shorter book with the Philip Wylie book "Gladiator" which is about a father that tampers with his unborn son and produces a super stong superman.

In "Superhuman Nature" we never learn what or who causes Hitchens to come to have the powers of a god, but like "Gladiator" he finds that being a superman is no guarantee that things will go well for him. As his powers increase his humanity fades, as he's used by the government, the more situations get worse, not better.
While listed as Science Fiction, this is more of a Science Fantasy story.
You'll read avidly to see what happens next, and it always surprises.

I've read a lot of book written by far more famous authors that didn't produce like this one.
I'll watch to see what Overall comes up with next.
When will I see the sequel? You can't leave us hanging! Great book and I really enjoyed it. One of the many books I actually finished and enjoyed. I bought it because the author Brandon (Sir) Overall is someone I know. I didn't really think it would be good. But from the very start, it captured my imagination which is very unusual.

Highly recommend this book!!!
This is not a typical superhero story. The story twists and turns, with at first, it seems, unpredictable results. Bad people die. Good people die. You never know what's going to happen.

The book starts out well, and is fairly well written. But somewhere along, the story becomes more, I don't know, 'vague'. I felt as if the author was struggling with some of the story and tried to solve it.

There are also heaps of things that haven't been explained at the end of the book. There's this presence that influences people,
guides them, but what ? from where ? how ? No explanation.

Still a good book though, but strange how it turned out. Read it for something Different.
The story started out like "Jumper", a young man discovers he has been gifted with super human powers, but the story just kept getting darker. As his power increased, it stripped away his humanity until I just wanted him to die to end the story. It was well enough written, but I like upbeat books. You might like it if you like depressing novels like "Billy Bud" by Herman Melville, "Rabbit Run" by John Updike or " As I Lay Dying" by William Faulkner.
The author begins and ends by stating that humanity has no significance, meaning, or purpose. Unfortunately he doesn't seem to realize that this means his story has no meaning then either. Who cares if millions die, which they do. Who cares if there's a nuclear war or not? Who cares if the hero/villain lives or dies? You can start a story with nihilism and then discover meaning, or you can start with meaning and then claim to discover that life has no meaning. But you can't start and end without meaning and expect anyone to read your second book.

Apart from my philosophical/theological objections, the book was not a bad first effort. It felt rather wooden, but the character development (at least of the main characters) was not too bad. All other characters remained cardboard. You started to care about the girl, but she quickly became irrelevant. The idea of the change in the hero and how he would manage it kept me reading at first, but then it just lost any reason to care what would happen. Thankfully, it's written at such a simple level you can speed read this puppy in an evening.
